Brain Performance and Dementia from Ultrafine Particles (UFP)

Ultrafine Particles (UFP) of size 100 nanometers and smaller can enter the bloodstream in the lungs, pass through the blood-brain barrier, and enter cells, thereby interfering with cell performance. The result is often significant degradation of brain performance, and in advanced cases dementia and even Alzheimer's Disease.

Many scientific studies which test people on high pollution days and in high particulate areas have shown that test performance has dropped with increased pollution levels, especially on verbal skills.

Scientific studies in China have measured this, to try to measure approximately how much degradation comes with each level of pollution.

Rates of dementia are much higher in people who live near a major road. Of course, clinical dementia is an extreme, and there are many levels of decreased mental performance which affect your quality of existence in life which are not extreme enough to be called "dementia".
